Be Counted Barstow. . .It’s in Our Hands!  During the last census in 2000, the Barstow area had the lowest percentage of returned census questionnaires in San Bernardino County at only 58 percent (county average was 70 percent). Barstow-area concerned community leaders from the schools, churches, media, government, social services and other orgnaizations have put together a Complete Count Committee to ensure everyone in the Barstow area is counted this time around on the Census 2010 (Census Day is April 1, 2010). For more information on this committee, contact Jeanette Hayhurst (co-chair with Carmen Hernandez) at the City of Barstow, 760-255-5102. 12th Annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular Join the City's of Barstow at its 12th annual Fireworks Spectacular on Friday, July 4, at the Robert A Session Memorial Sportspark. This year's free community celebration day is in appreciation for the community’s efforts in successfully diverting its solid waste from the landfill.The day begins with a free 5K Freedom Run at 7 a.m. at the Sportspark. Gates open later in the day at 5 p.m. for the evening activities.  Children’s entertainment includes inflatable water attractions, giant bounce houses and more. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic baskets (BBQs and outside alcohol not permitted) and enjoy live music by the Phat Cat Swinger band.At 9 p.m., the largest fireworks spectacular in the history of the event will culminate the day’s events. Highway Country (FM 101.5 and 107.3) will provide the musical simulcast to the fireworks show. Free bus transportation is being provided to and from the event. VOCATIONAL SUMMER CAMP 6/29 THRU 7/23                                                                                                         Barstow Community College will host a Career Training Education (CTE) summer camp geared towards 7th and 8th grade students. The camp will run Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning June 29 through July 23. The 4-week camp consists of hands-on activities exploring the various vocational courses available through BCC.  The camp will explore courses in Green Technology, Film Production and Marketing, Health and Science and Physical Education.  CTE field trips are planned for the week of July 20. Registration forms are available through the Career and Transfer Center on the BCC campus by calling Sandi Thomas at 252-2411 ext 7283, or on the college website www.barstow.edu

Jr. Naturalist Summer Camp

The Desert Discovery Center, located at 831 Barstow Rd., will be hosting a Jr. Naturalist Summer Day Camp program with 4 seperate sessions from July 13 - August 7, 2007.  This program will provide hands-on outdoor experiences for children ages 7-12 that help stimulate curiosity, foster appreciation, and teach about the endless wonders of the Mojave Desert. Registration is open  and each session is restricted to 12 children.  Total camp fee is $90.00 with a $25.00 non-refundable registration fee due by the first day of camp on July 13th.  This fee will be applied toward total camp fee. Scholarships are available Please contact Rosa Yriarte at (760) 252-6060 for a registration packet or Scholarship form.  A space will be reserved only upon receipt of a completed registration form and payment.  Businesses and organizations that would like to sponsor a child to attend this fun-filled summer experience are encouraged to call as well.

About the Chamber

The Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau is a voluntary organization of businesses and professionals with mutual interests in promoting commerce and tourism throughout the region.
The chamber's strength is in its membership, accomplishing together what no one business could do alone. It is a networking organization, bringing businesses together, referring customers, and creating good will as a welcoming committee to new businesses. The chamber is also a conduit between the community and the military population at Marine Base Barstow and Ft. Irwin.
